 The History Room
What?

ASCIIpella is a collegiate a cappella group comprised of eleven talented people.  We sing and we play music.  When we sing, we only sing a cappella, and when we play music, we never forget to put essence of a cappella in our songs
Who?

We come from the same department and from the same university.  All eleven of us come from Faculty of Computer Sciences, Universitas Indonesia.  We lived in Jakarta, the capital city of Indonesia, and we're the symbol of unity in diversity, a mix of Javanese, Batak, Chinese, Japanese, Ambonese, Padang, Kalimantan, Sundanese etc.
Where?

Here and everywhere!  We are based in our campus, Faculty of  Computer Sciences (Fasilkom), Universitas Indonesia, in Depok.  We rehearse in campus or in one of the member's room in their dormitories (also in Depok).  If not in Cempaka dormitory, then in Lambang Biru or Marsini.  The places that's full of memories.

We've conduct our performances everywhere.  Pasar Murah (Faculty of Psychology), English Days (Faculty of Law), Tribute to Indonesia (AFS), Jimbani Cafe, and many more.

 When?

Now!  Although we're from different classes and different ages, although still in a range of 19-25 (adolescent), we are from the present.  We've had our bittersweet past and we face our unpredictable future.  We plan, we do it, we learn.  Now! That's when....
 Why?

Why ASCIIpella? Why not Fasilkom Voices? Or A Cappella Fasilkom? Or Take 11?  Well, the name was chosen from about a dozen other options that we got from putting some kind of a balloting in our local newsgroups.  We've got Sound Blaster, Voice Mail, etc.  But we pick ASCIIpella, because ASCII is a well known code in computer science and used in all PC applications widely, and we put 'pella' at the back of the name to remind people that we're an a cappella group.   ASCII (short for American Standard Code for Information Instructions) is a 7 bit code, whereas we started from 7 people.  The fact that we've grown our numbers to eleven doesn't effect the name.  And why a cappella? Simply because we all adore this certain genre.  We like other musical style, like alternative, jazz, pop and others.  But we all love a cappella. See?
How?

Firstly, in year 1995, there were 4 of us.  Still a small number, eh?  Alvon '92, Arif '93, Elsie '94 and Intan '95, got together and started a conversation on how they love a cappella so much.   And with a local event coming, they wanted to be prepared with something, something like a cappella.  Started of as a barbershop group, they found a Bass (Arif '93 and Alvon '92 are both tenors).  He is Ari '95.  Then they rehearsed and found that Ari's voice were not clicking with the others.  So they looked for another and found ArifP '94, who is a Baritone, but sufficiently fulfilling.  So they performed in 5 voices, a doo wop.

1996, along with all the success of performing in many places,  they started to expand to had become a contemporary a cappella, so they need a real Bass.  They've found the quality in Ruli '92.  Along with Ruli '92, came Raymond '96. With 2 compatible talents we were complete.  Now we need a name.  And so we choose ASCIIpella.

1997, we added up 4 more freshmen.  Now, with Hiro '97, Tomas '97, Yuli '97, and Rivan '97, we are the best collegiate a cappella in town.
